No building can do without hinges and locks; it is the foundation for safety, functionality, comfort, but also aesthetics. Hinges are an important part of this. They are applied to the rotating parts of a building: doors, windows, fences, gates and shutters. Often with only a functional purpose but also increasingly to support the aesthetic whole. But how do you choose the right type of hinge for your job? At Dulimex we are happy to help you make the right choice.
Straight and round corners, galvanized and stainless steel, with and without SKG quality mark, loose pin, ball and nylon bearing hinges or paumelle hinges; a DX® hinge can be used for almost all situations around a home or utility building. These hinges are most commonly used in the construction sector:
Which type of hinge you choose and which properties this hinge must have strongly depends on the application, personal wishes, any prescribed requirements and practical feasibility. We are happy to help you on your way by reflecting on a number of aspects.
Is the hinge or paumelle hinge used on a door, window or hatch?
With an interior door in a steel or wooden frame it is common to use a paumelle hinge but with an exterior door or window, depending on the situation, you are more likely to choose a specific type of hinge.
Is the hinge or paumelle hinge used inside or outside?
For an outdoor application, such as the front door, back door, shed- and garden door, it is recommended to use a stainless steel hinge. The stainless steel AISI 304 hinges are extremely corrosion resistant. For the application on an interior door or window, a galvanized steel hinge will suffice functionally, but on an aesthetic level brushed stainless steel can also be chosen, possibly with a black finish.
How heavy is the door or window?
The weight of the door or window determines which type and number of hinges you can use. For heavier doors such as the exterior doors it is common to choose a ball bearing hinge, nylon sliding bearing hinge or a flag hinge. But a hinge with a loose pin is also sufficient for light doors and windows. For more information about the load-bearing capacity of a hinge, check the page "Support charts">
Is burglar resistance desirable?
When a window or door opens outwards it is recommended to use SKG approved hinges. These burglar-resistant hinges are usually provided with an anti-burglary pin that is on the hinge. An exception to this is our stainless steel flag hinge with which we have won the prize for the most innovative PKVW product of 2018. This hinge is SKG approved without an anti-burglary pin. When only four hinges are used, a door can be hung in accordance with SKG *** ®. Read more about this paumelle hinge here>.
Is the hinge or paumelle hinge routed in and if so, is this done by machine or by hand?
Hinges with rounded corners are used for machine routed recesses in the frame. If the recess has to be chiseled out or the hinge is screwed onto the frame without a recess, hinges with square corners are used.
