Robert van Embricqs, the recipient of the Red Dot Design Award for his Rising Chair, delivers TED Talks on bringing his creativity to fruition, and his designs are showcased in the Netflix film Big Bug (2022). The news of our hinges being a crucial component in his constructions filled us with excitement. Our account manager, Alexander, personally visited him to discuss this collaboration.
When asked how he would describe his designs, Robert van Embricqs responds, "Art and functionality are one. My starting point is that my designs are aesthetic but not just to look at, as is the case with art. My furniture has a clear function that everyone recognizes, but they always return to the flat basic form.

In response to the question about his biggest challenge, he answers, 'Creating the most functional piece of furniture without compromising on the aesthetic side.'
To make this art functional, DX brass narrow hinges are used. Creating a working prototype takes at least three months. After that, everything needs to be fine-tuned. Depending on the product, around 30 to 130 narrow hinges are used, all of which are assembled manually. In the beginning, Robert Embriqs made all the furniture pieces himself, but nowadays, he collaborates with an external party. It remains manual work, with each hinge pre-drilled and then manually screwed in place.
These hinges were requested and supplied through our customer HevuTools from Beek en Donk. Because they were curious about why so many hinges were ordered at once, they discovered this unique application.
"Such a charming application," expresses sales representive Gerben from Hevu with enthusiasm when queried about his thoughts.
During Milan Design Week (Salone del Mobile), Dutch designers, companies, and galleries have the opportunity to showcase their designs through Masterly - The Dutch in Milano.
Robert van Embricqs showcased the design he is most proud, the Flow Wall Desk, at Masterly - The Dutch in Milano. Even Queen Maxima admired his design, expressing surprise that it was of Dutch origin. However, to Robert's knowledge, there is none in the royal palace yet!
This design originated from a request by a Swiss customer looking for an efficient desk for remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Robert (36) was born in Suriname and studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The Rising Chair emerged during his graduation in 2010. After working for an architect for a while, he started his own business in 2012, and since then, he has accumulated numerous unique designs to his name.
